Setup a page to have people sign-up. Pretty much what we have done with our newsletter page. You can then view the subscribers from the admin console.
Single or multi user sign-up
Choose to have the default single user setup or have multi user setup with the option to set the new user as a standard or admin user.
Switch for classic or mobile mode.
This is really for simple websites, giving a user the ability to click and view the site for small res / mobile views.

A busy period for web browsers

Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox... lo

It has been a busy 2 weeks for browser releases. Opera 11.01 came out as well. And I love Opera; for the mobile and the desktop it is just awesome, well designed and nice usability. Firefox 4 just came out as well, with more support for HTML 5 and other fancies, zooming in and out so accessibility is no longer necessarily a sites issue. If like me you use Linux and Win you need a consistent feel from your browser, which IE can't ever accomplish. But as these browsers come out we need to check that our sites work across all of them. We'll let you know how your structurl se site is running, you let us know which browser is your favorite.

As I've previously mentioned here on structurl(tm) news the dangers of using names similar to existing trademarks I thought I'd post it here and again remind you all to be careful about choosing a domain name without the reseach. BBC is reporting on users complaints of 'missing' Hotmail emails. Apparently it is not a widespread issue and Microsoft is correcting it. Get your own email hostedThis is a prime example of why you need your own email account, especially if you own a business. If you have your own domain registered and you host it with a reliable provider you should be safe from these sort of issues. Always backupIf you have important emails you should definitely have them backed up as well. Always make backups of your email and ask your web host to make backup's too if you feel thats necessary. Google Apps, which allows you to host your own domain against google services has had product name changes to seperate the offerings, and they've also added more services to the mix. So services that were previously only available against personal accounts can now be used with Google Apps. For example, Blogger, AdWords, Maps etc can all be used with your Google Apps account. Check out more here Netbean 7.0 has hit BETA, with some great new features plus Maven 3 support. Remember it's BETA. Mozilla's revenue has increased to $104 million, mostly due to search royalties.. yup, everytime you search they get something back. Going to have to start my own browser.. And finally.. a Rant. Nokia please tell everyone what is going on with the Nokia Communities network connection issue on the C3. Or just fix it.

A 100 year old business, or even you and your small or home-based business could get more from the internet. Get it right and it results in sales. That's doing better.

I've been looking at the contestants in a major site's woman owned and home based business categories, and have been amazed at the innovation and enterpreneurship out there. Congratulations, firstly, to the finalists and good luck to every business owner for the future. What i noticed as I went through the list, was that a percentage of the contestants could have used some assistance with their presentation, their websites or related areas. Here's a list of tips for business owners who may not have a website, may just have got one, or who just have no idea. Get a domain, then do something with it. It's great to advertise a link to your business website, but please ensure it has a great landing page for your business at the very least. DO NOT advertise your website and then when we click through to it it is on a free host and contains only google or similar advertisements. You lose clients if your site isn't running. Get a website, but don't cloud it with copy If you have text and images running along the main body, down the sidebars and across the footers without any structure, clients won't know where to start, and may not make it to the call to actions. Make the call to action visible From my previous point, the call to action is where you ask them to sign-up, to buy or to perform a similar action which you hope will result in a positive response. Don't hide them. Use a content management system Make sure it is easy to edit your website content, so that if a dead link or spelling mistake is found you can fix it asap. Look professional, act quickly. Ask for help Ask for help, but be careful where you ask. Social media experts, SEO experts, SEM experts, Wordpress experts. There's a lot of people selling magic out there. Be realistic on what you need, and of course what you will get. Always, always trust what you are selling, and show it off the best you can, and partner with someone who shares the same values.

Fix smartsvn.sh so it will run

linux, subversion, svn, smartsvn, structurl™ tips
I've previously posted on a cool SVN client - http://structurl.com/news/need-a-good-subversion-client
Turns out that alot of people are hitting structurl.com looking for the answer to smartsvn.sh won't run on linux, or smartsvn.sh wont start. Thats from my site analytics telling me so.
The answer, of course, which I didn't alude to in that post mentioned above, is that you need to do the following. Make sure that Java is installed. Then, open your smartsvn.sh file from where ever you installed it to. Use this command from the terminal if you don't know what to use:
gedit smartsvn.sh
Then at line 6 you will see the JAVA_HOME variable is commented out. Now you need to know where you installed java to, but on my CentOS 5.2 installation it was here:
JAVA_HOME=usr/java/latest
Save the smartsvn.sh file and try again, from the terminal:
sh smartsvn.sh

Want to do a rDNS lookup?
On Linux, you can use dig to figure this out.
On Windows, you can use nslookup.
At the command line type nslookup.
Then type set type=ptr
There after type in the IP address you are looking for x.x.x.x
If there is a result you should see x.x.x.x.in-addr.arpa name=domainname.tld.
Is that what you expected? If not, DNS may not have propogated yet.

How to make a website part 2: Setting up a domain

Following on from part 1 on this series - How to make a website / I need a website for my business
You now know that you will need a domain name, renewal with costs yearly. So does your marketing budget doesn't it?
Your website will work for you while you are sleeping, at the movies or having sunday lunch. You need it.
Let's get that domain name registered and setup.
Got a name? Is it unique
You have a name you'd like to register for your business but have you thought about these things:
1. Is it part of your business brand? Yes - move on.
2. Is it a name which may violate a trademark or cause legal action? Yes - start again, we don't want you stepping on toes.
3. Is the domain name easy to remember, unique, short, or web 2.0 cool? Yes, then you're on a role. Lets move on.
Registering the domain
We could say you need to register the domain through us. That would be nice. However in the interests of good service and transparency you could register it anywhere. We're not going to mention the names of registrars because we won't get paid for it... However there are many, most are considered reliable. Or we could register it for you.
Once you've paid for the domain registration and the order is confirmed, you need to host it somewhere. Some hosts offer free hosting. Some do not. Some offer complex site builders that may go over your head or help you setup the first page at the very least.
But you need to host it.
Host it
We could say you could host the domain and the email at that domain through us. Again, that would be nice.
Wherever you choose to host it though you will need a hosting account and the nameservers that the internet service provider will provide you. You will then set the domain at the registrar to point to those nameservers so that the internet can find your domain through DNS (Domain Name System).
Now your domain should point to the server setup by your host. It may take time to propogate. While it does we need to think about getting your business site up and running quickly. That's another post.

A thought.. Is your telephone working? Now, is your email address working?

If your telephone number was out of service for whatever reason, wouldn't you do whatever you could to ensure that if one of your clients tried to call they would get through?
So if you've advertised your email address as part of your marketing material shouldn't you keep an eye on it? Whether you email address is at your Internet Service Provider or if you have your own domain, keep an eye on it to ensure that it is working for you just like your telephone.
So what should you check specifically?
Check that the email address is still working. Don't advertise an email address and then cancel the account because if a prospect tries to email you it won't look good if the address no longer exists.
Check that your mailbox isn't full, receiving a message saying the email cannot be accepted due to a full mailbox is just, well, bad.
And lastly, log in to your email account regularly, just like you would check your phone messages.

How to make a website / I need a website for my business

It an interesting title isn't it... How to make a website. It also doesn't sound quite right. But it seems to be a popular search query.
If you are a business owner, new to the internet and you've figured out that your competition is on the internet and you aren't, that is a start. The next step is getting on the internet and competing on the greatest playing field of them all.
A business which doesn't feel it needs a professional domain name and great looking website to market its products or services may not be seeing the full potential. A business with an email address on its own domain seems more professional, at first glance, than a business advertising a gmail.com or live.com email address on it's business cards. Secondly, if a client is looking for a product or service and your competitor is online, that client can see their work. How do they see yours? You need that web presence. I can't remember when the last time was I used the yellow pages, I search in google and I'm sure I'm not alone there. So that advert in the pages may work for traditional clients but what about the tech literate?
So here's the how to make a website bit, so you can play the part on the web that you are in your business. Professional, well presented and proud to show off your stuff.
I'll be writing it in parts, so keep coming back for the next article.
Part 1 - the domain name.
1. Register a domain name for your business. Do not use a trademark or someone else's name.
2. Think about the name and what it will represent, especially if it isn't your business name.
3. Keep it short. Emailing info@momandpopsonfifthavenuenewjersey.com is too long.
4. More than 1 word? Make sure it doesn't spell something ugly when it concatenated..
5. Pay for it. Yep, it ain't free. And you'll pay for it next year again to renew.
Now you've got the domain, congratulations! Change the business cards or get it setup depends on how quickly you can get online. Lets figure that out in the next article.

Feedburner emails RSS from structurl se with white text color

If you are using structurl se™ and have a feedburner account linked to your structurl se RSS feed you may notice that the text color is white against a white background.
To fix that, log into Feedburner, go to Publicize :: Email Subscriptions :: Email branding and change the Body Color. It is most likely #FFFFFF, change it to #000000 or choose a color from the pallete.

How to: Change your email password

Change your email password using the webmail URL on your domain.
Replace mydomain.com with your actual domain name
So, with the email address provided to you, e.g. myname@mydomain.com, go to
http://mydomain.com/webmail
There you will be prompted to enter your email address and the password provided to you.
Enter those details and if correct you will be logged in. Then, take a look at the bottom left corner and you will see this:
click on that and change your password. Done!

site essentials (se) has gotten some cool updates.
- If you are running a small amount of pages, and you want to have a feedburner email subscription box, you can now add a content type and it will load on the pages you link it to.
- The structurl™ se standard horizontal menu for top nav works beautifully. Limited to 1 sub menu.
- The content management page in the console now allows you to view the pictures you've uploaded with an AJAXy load / hide
- Setup a default page template in the site config and load that template, especially useful for common page layouts.

Need a good Subversion client on Linux?

Having played with a couple of SVN clients on both Windows and Linux, I must say that I really like the SmartSVN client for Subversion.
Version 6.x is really great and you can use the 'community' version at no cost. I miss the Export functionality once the trial is disabled, but thats easy to work around using the svn command line tools.
So it may require tweaking the smartsvn.sh file to point to the correct JRE on CentOS 5.3 but that is minor.
The interface is neat, clean and simple.
Now how do we get around the export functionality being disabled after the trial ends?
Run this command at the terminal after going to the folder you want to create the export in:
svn export http://yourservername/svn-path/project
Enter your username and password, and the export should occur, minus those hidden .svn folders!
